%BRegarding Visa Application of Annette Roch

%aKnowledge of the Applicant%1

I know the applicant, Annette Roch, born on June 1, 1949 in Leipzig,
as a free-lance artist (painter) who is currently
living and working in Berlin. Her work came to my attention while I was
a guest of the city of Berlin on a grant from the DAAD (Berlin Artist Program)
from April 1974 until April 1975.
%aPurpose of Applicant's Visit%1
In recent years substantial advances have been made in the application
of high level computer technology to the arts. At the Stanford Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory we have developed computer graphics to a point
where they are of considerable interest to the visual artist. We are
generally interested in young artists becoming aware of these possibilities
in the context of the computer environment in order that maximum information
can be obtained in a minimum time.
Ms. Roch is an ideal candidate for the exploration of computer graphics as
applied to the fine arts. She is thoroughly trained in the traditional
techniques and has the intelligence, imagination, and interest to pursue
what we estimate to be a two year project in thoroughly learning computer
technology in this special application.
The information and techniques which she will have learned, will allow her
to return after her two year visit and set up a graphics system
on one of the large computer facilities which exist in Berlin. This is
particularly attractive as one of these computers is identical to the
Stanford computer which will mean that Ms. Roch will have little computer
to computer conversion problems.
%aSupport and Residence During Two Year Visa Period%1
Ms. Roch understands that we are unable at this time to provide her with
a stipend. She has assured us, however, that she will have a monthly income
from a member of her family sufficient to meet her expenses during her visit
here. We can, however, guarantee Ms. Roch a room in the home of Mr. Lester
Earnest, Executive Director, Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory,
whose home address is:
